렘 수면과 비렘 수면, REM sleep and non-REM sleep

수면 주기를
- 렘 수면과
- 비렘 수면으로 분류한다.
렘 수면을
- “활동성 수면”
- 또는 “선잠”이라고도 한다.
- 깊은 잠에 들기 전 수면상태를 렘 수면이라고 한다.
- 렘 수면으로 자는 기간을 렘 수면기간이라 한다.
- 정상적으로, 렘 수면기 동안 신생아들이나 영아들은 정상적으로 팔이나 다리를 도리깨질 치듯 움직일 수 있다.
- 렘 수면기 동안 영유아들의 안구를 조심히 살펴보면 눈꺼풀로 덮여 있는 안구가 정상적으로 계속 움직이는 것을 볼 수 있다.
- 더 잘 살펴보면 정상적으로 숨을 불규칙하게 잠간동안 쉬기도 한다.
- 어떤 여유아들은 정상적으로, 렘 수면기 동안 자면서도 슬그머니 미소 짓기도 하고 입으로 무엇을 빨아먹는 시늉 하면서 입을 움직이기도 한다. 또 얼굴에 여러 가지 표정을 나타내기도 한다.
- 렘 수면 처음 얼마동안 이런 수면 패턴이 계속되다가 비 렘 수면기로 들어간다. 그래서 영유아들이 깊은 잠에 빠진다.
비렘 수면은
- 렘 수면 기간 뒤에 오는 수면이고
- 깊이 잠든 수면상태이다.
- 비렘 수면으로 자는 기간을 비렘 수면 기간이라고 한다.
- 비렘 수면을 편의상 4단계 수면으로 세분한다.
- 비렘 수면의 각 단계에서 검사한 뇌파의 변화, 근육의 움직임, 안구의 움직임, 심장 박동, 호흡 상태를 살펴보면 특이한 변화가 정상적으로 나타난다. 그런 변화의 정도를 타각적으로 측정, 평가할 수 있다.
신생아들이나 영아들의 수면패턴은 렘 수면기와 비렘 수면기가 혼합되어 있는 것이 보통이다.
신생아들이나 영아들의 정상적 수면 상태와 수면 패턴이다. 이런 수면패턴의 주기가 불규칙적으로 온다. 때로는 그 기간이 정상적으로 더 길게, 또는 더 짧게 오면서 잠을 잔다. 신생아들이 잘 때 렘 수면과 비렘 수면을 살펴보면 왜 신생아의 수면 패턴이 성인들의 수면 패턴과 다른지 이해 할 수 있을 것이다.

REM sleep and non-REM sleep

• Sleep cycle

o REM sleep

o Classified as non-REM sleep.

• REM sleep

o “Active Sleep” Also called

o or “sleep”.

o The state of sleep before deep sleep is called REM sleep.

o The period of sleep in REM sleep is called the REM sleep period.

o Normally, during REM sleep, newborns and infants are able to flail their arms and legs normally.

o If you look carefully at the eyes of infants and young children during REM sleep, you can see that the eyes covered by the eyelids continue to move normally.

o If you look closely, you may be breathing normally and irregularly for short periods of time.

o Some spare children smile while sleeping normally during REM sleep and move their mouths while pretending to suck something with their mouth. They also show different expressions on their faces.

o REM sleep

This sleep pattern continues for a while, then enters non-REM sleep. So babies and young children fall into a deep sleep.

• Non-REM sleep

o Sleep that follows the REM sleep period

o Deep sleep.

o The period of non-REM sleep is called the non-REM sleep period.

o Non-REM sleep is subdivided into 4 stages of sleep for convenience.

o If you look at the changes in EEG, muscle movements, eye movements, heart rate, and breathing conditions examined at each stage of non-REM sleep, unusual changes appear normally. The degree of such change can be objectively measured and evaluated.

• Sleep patterns of newborns and infants are usually a mixture of REM sleep and non-REM sleep.

• Normal sleep conditions and sleep patterns in newborns and infants. This sleep pattern cycle comes irregularly. Sometimes the period normally comes longer or shorter and sleeps. If we look at REM and non-REM sleep when newborns sleep, we can understand why newborn sleep patterns differ from those of adults.
