 나의 남동생이 일본뇌염에 걸려 1주일 동안 혼수상태로 사경에 있다가 회복된 후 그에게 뇌전증이 생겼다. 

   중고등학교를 다니는 동안 뇌전증으로 전신 경련발작(Generalized tonic –clonic seizure)을 했었다. 그는 뇌전

  증으로 인해서 젊은 나이에 이 세상을 떠났다.

▪ 동생의 뇌전증으로 인해 부모들은 물론이고 나 자신도 그리고 우리 형제자매들과 온 가족들이 정신적으로 많이

 고생했다. 그가 뇌전증으로 고생하고 서거함으로 인해 지금도 전 가족들이 마음 아파하면서 살고 있다는 것을 여기서

  고  백하고 싶다.

▪ 내가 『소아청소년 뇌전증과 뇌전증 백문백답』을 엮고 있는 동기도 바로 내 동생 상도가 이 세상에서 뇌전증으로

  많이 고생했기 때문이다.

▪ 나의 절친한 친구들 중 한 분도 뇌전증이 있어 40여 년 동안 항뇌전증 약물로 치료를 받으면서 의료생활을 잘

 해 냈다. 선한 싸움을 잘 끝내고 지금 편안히 건강하게 퇴직하고 쉬고 있다. 그 분 말고 내 주위에도 젊은이들, 

  연만한 분들이 뇌전증에 걸려 많이 고생한다.

▪ 뇌전증이 있는 자녀를 가진 부모나 그런 형제자매를 가진 형제자매들은 가족에게 뇌전증이 있는 가족이 있다는

  사실로 인해 두려움, 분노, 죄악감, 슬픈 감정, 부끄럼을 가슴에 품고 사는 것이 보통이다.

▪ 뇌전증 자녀를 육아하는 동안 가정의 기능이 파괴될 수 있고, 경제적 파탄에 빠질 수 있고, 전 식구들이 우울해질 수도

  있고, 정신병에 걸릴 수도 있다.

▪ 이런 만성 신경계 질환 뇌전증이 있는 자녀를 둔 부모나 형제자매들 자신들만이 항뇌전증 약물로 뇌전증을 가진

  가족을 전적으로 치료를 해 준다는 것은 여러모로 불가능하다.

▪ ‘불치병 간질‘에 걸려있다는 낙인이 찍힌 그를 누가 친구로 삼으려고 했을까?

▪ 그에게 누가 직장을 주겠다고 했을까?

▪ 언제 어떻게 발작이 일어날지 모르는 그에게 말이다.

▪ 지금같이 이렇게 많이 알았다면 나의 동생 상도의 두 손을 꼭 잡아 주고 뇌전증으로 생기는 발작이 더 이상

  일어나지 않게 치료해 주겠다는 말을 크게 외치면서 나는 동생을 꼭 껴안아 주겠다. 그리고 네가 그런 병을 가지고

  있다고 조금도 부끄럽게 생각하지 않겠다고.

▪ 아무도 그에게 희망(HOPE)도, 사랑(LOVE)도 안겨 주지 않았다.

▪ 뇌전증이 있는 아이가 사는 그 마을 그 사회, 그 나라와 모든 의료 전문가, 사회복지사, 교육자, 심리사, 정신 정서

   전문가들이 뇌전증이 있는 자녀를 둔 부모와 뇌전증 아이들과 함께, 머리를 맞대고 뇌전증 아이들을 올바르게 진단·

   치료해 주어야 하는 것은 의무이고 권리이다. 부모나 그의 가족들만이 뇌전증을 가진 자녀를 치료하라는 국가

   정책은  크게 잘못된 것이다.

▪ 뇌전증이 있는 자녀를 둔 부모들과 그의 형제자매들이 정신적, 육체적, 심리적 고통으로부터 벗어나도록 도와줄 수

  있는 멋진 사회와 국가가 되어야 한다.

▪ 미국 전체 국민들 중 뇌전증을 가진 사람들 수는 3백만 이상이 된다. 한국 뇌전증을 가진 사람들은 아마도 50만 명

  이상이 될 것이라고 추정된다.

▪ 미국에서는 뇌전증을 가진 아이들과 그들의 가정의 경제적 문제뿐만 아니라, 그들의 교육 문제, 자라서 성인이 된 후

  직업문제, 의식주 문제도 도와주고 있다.

▪ 그뿐만 아니라, 의사들은 사랑으로 진료해 주고 보살펴 주고 있다.

▪ 그들을 돌봐 주기 위해 비영리 뇌전증 재단을 미국 국가 차원에서 주, 시, 읍, 카운티. 마을 단위로 설립하고 있다.

▪ 뇌전증 환자를 돕기 위해, 각 마을, 읍, 카운티, 시, 주 단위로 뇌전증 돕기 재단을 설립하고 그와 동시에 그들을

  도와줄 수 있는 뇌전증 망상조직 지원단체도 설립되어 있다.

▪ 이와 같이 뇌전증 자녀들의 부모들이나 형제자매들 또는 뇌전증이 있는 아이들의 건강과 안녕 증진을 도와줄 수 있는

  비영리적 뇌전증 재단이 미국 여기저기에 설립되어 있다. 이 얼마나 아름다운 나라인가.

▪ 이런 국가차원의 도움과 비영리적 뇌전증 재단들을 통해, 뇌전증을 가진 그들도, 부모들도 희망을 갖게 되었다.

▪ 나 자신도 특별히 뇌전증에 관해 관심을 갖고 미국 뇌전증 환자들과 정신지체자들을 수용했던 Training School에서

  전문의로서 40여 년 전 3년 동안 진료생활을 했다. 그 후 조국에 돌아가 정신지체자들과 뇌전증 등을 가진 사람들을

  진료하는 미국식 Training School을 국가적 차원에서 설립하고 싶은 때도 있었다.

▪ 이런저런 이유로 내가 뇌전증 아이들과 그들의 가족을 돕고 싶은 데서 이런 소아청소년 뇌전증과 뇌전증 백문백답을

  저작하고 있다고 이 기회에 또 한 번 말씀드린다.

▪ 각 마을, 읍, 면, 군, 시 도 지역단위로 뇌전증 아이들과 그 가족을 돕는 비영리 뇌전증 재단과 뇌전증 망상조직 단체를

 설립해서 운영하는 것은 얼마나 멋진 이웃 사랑인가.

▪ ‘간질’이란 병명을 다른 병명으로 바꾸자는 제안이 나의 1988년 저서 『소아 가정의학백과 간질』에 있었다. 그 꿈을

  현실로 만들어 주신 고국 선후배님들께 감사드린다. 나의 꿈의 일부는 이루어졌다. 고맙다. 이제 ‘간질’이란 병명

  대신 ‘뇌전증’이라고 부르기로 하자.

▪ If I had known so much as I do now, I would hold my brother Sangdo’s hands tightly and stop the seizures caused by epilepsy. I will hug my brother tightly while shouting out loud that I will cure him so that it doesn’t happen. and you have that disease I wouldn’t be ashamed of it in the slightest.

▪ No one gave him hope (HOPE) or love (LOVE).

There were times when I wanted to establish an American-style training school for medical care at the national level.

▪ A proposal to change the name of ‘epilepsy’ to another disease was proposed in my 1988 book 『Encyclopedia of Pediatric Family Medicine and Epilepsy』. that dream Thank you to the seniors and juniors in Korea who made it a reality. Part of my dream has come true. Thank you. Now called ‘epilepsy’ Let’s call it ‘epilepsy’ instead.
